Study Abroad in the USA

The American ‘liberal education’ system allows students the freedom to study a wide range of courses before choosing a ‘major’ subject. The wide range of modules offered over the course of your degree will give you a broad and varied education.

Associate Degree

Two-year associate’s degrees are offered at community colleges. These are specialized courses to help prepare you for further study. Students often transfer to larger universities afterwards, to complete a bachelor’s degree over another two years. There are two types of associate’s degree:

  • Associate of Arts (A.A.)
  • Associate of Science (A.S.).

Undergraduate Degree

Known as bachelor’s degrees, these in-depth degrees take four years to complete at your chosen university. They are offered in a wide range of subjects and can lead to promising careers.

Graduate Degree

There are two types of graduate degree in the USA:

  • Master's degree
  • Doctoral degree

Graduate degrees mainly revolve around independent study, guided by academic specialists in your chosen subject. It may be academic, research or industry-based. Merrimack offers one and two-year master’s programs in schools including Business, Engineering and Liberal Arts.

If you have already completed an undergraduate degree in your home country, you can study a specialised Pre-Master’s Program at Merrimack before progression to a master's degree.

University Preparation for International Students

Merrimack College International Study Center offers four pathway programs leading to graduate study at Merrimack. Depending on your level of English, you can take the 1-semester or 2-semester option.

What is Involved in the Pre-Master’s Program?

Programs provide a unique combination of English language, academic modules and study skills training for international students who want to further their careers.

  • Small classes within an academically rigorous and inspirational environment.
  • Progress regularly tracked by experienced staff.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Merrimack professors are more than just teachers. They engage, mentor, and connect with you. This helps you to become a more confident and prepared graduate.

Merrimack College is different from other universities. It provides you with a contemporary learning environment that lets you put what you have learned into practice. In North Andover and Boston, you will find hands-on opportunities with some of the most prestigious finance, technology, and healthcare companies.

The O’Brien Center for Student Success provides career services that meet your specific needs, improving your chance of success. The Center coordinates hands-on learning opportunities such as co-ops and internships. They allow you to apply your classroom skills in real-world settings.

Student Support

Merrimack has a supportive community that celebrates purposeful education and personal growth. You will have the opportunity to get to know your professors and other students on a personal level. This will enable you to build a strong network of lifelong friends and professional contacts. With a 14:1 student to faculty ratio, you will get more individual support. The O’Brien Center for Student Success provides resources and support to help you pursue the career you want.

Independent Study

Independent research using the University’s facilities is a big part of your postgraduate studies in the USA on the Merrimack campus. McQuade Library is open 24 hours per day during the week. It has four academic support offices, more than 200,000 books, films, photographs – and seven very knowledgeable librarians.


The type and number of assessments you will need to do while at university in the USA depends on your degree. Assessments may include:

  • Coursework
  • Project work
  • Presentations
  • Participation in seminars
  • Written assignments / essays
  • Practical assessments
  • Final dissertation.

Travel Information

  • Fly to Boston Logan International Airport (27 miles away) or Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (35 miles away). Both are approximately an hour away by taxi from campus.
  • Alternatively, from North Station in Boston, MA, take the Haverhill commuter rail line to either the Andover Station (2 miles from campus) or the Lawrence Station (3 miles from campus). There are frequent free university shuttle buses from Andover station to the campus.


Summer and Fall are generally mild in Andover. Winter and Spring are colder, with frequent snow. There are six to nine days average rainfall per month.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Average temperatures range from 16°F to 41°F.

Spring (Mar-May)

Average temperatures range from 27°F to 68°F.

Summer (June-Aug)

Average temperatures range from 57°F to 82°F.

Fall (Sept-Nov)

Average temperatures range from 30°F to 73°F.
